Why See a Chiropractor After a Car Accident

Most people expect to feel the full impact of a crash right away. That's not always how it works. After an accident, your body releases adrenaline that can mask pain for hours or even days. By the time soreness, stiffness, or headaches set in, the underlying injury has already had time to develop. Getting evaluated early matters.

An early chiropractic examination does two things. First, it identifies injuries that may not yet be causing significant pain — whiplash, soft tissue damage, and disc irritation are common examples. Second, it creates a clear record of your condition and symptoms from shortly after the accident. That documentation can be important if you file an insurance claim or work with a personal injury attorney.

Chiropractic care for accident injuries is hands-on and drug-free. It focuses on restoring normal movement, reducing inflammation, and addressing the root cause of pain rather than covering it up. It is not a replacement for emergency care. If you have severe pain, numbness in your limbs, difficulty breathing, or any symptom that felt alarming immediately after the crash, please go to the emergency room first

Common Car Accident Injuries We Treat

These are the injuries we most commonly see after a car accident      or traffic collision:

  • Whiplash and neck strain. Auto accident neck pain is one of the most common complaints we see. The rapid back-and-forth motion of a rear-end collision strains the muscles and ligaments of the neck, and symptoms often appear one to three days after the crash rather than immediately.

  • Low back pain and sciatica. Auto accident back pain affects a large share of patients after a collision, even low-speed ones. Impact forces travel through the spine, and the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints absorb a significant share of that force. Irritated discs or joints can press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain, tingling, or numbness into the legs.

  • Headaches after an accident. Post-traumatic headaches are often tied to tension in the neck muscles or upper cervical joints. They can feel like a tension headache or a pressure behind the eyes.

  • Shoulder and upper back pain. Bracing for impact, gripping the steering wheel, or being jolted sideways puts strain on the shoulder girdle and the muscles of the upper back. Pain here is easy to overlook at first.

  • Muscle and ligament sprains. Soft tissue injuries throughout the body are the most common result of a motor vehicle accident. They respond well to hands-on care, soft tissue therapy, and a structured rehab program.

  • Disc-related symptoms. A disc that was already under stress can bulge or herniate during the force of a crash. Disc symptoms often include localized back or neck pain combined with radiating pain, numbness, or weakness.

What to Expect at Your First Accident Visit

Your first appointment is a thorough evaluation, not just a quick look. Here is what it includes:

Case history. We'll ask you about the accident — how it happened, the direction of impact, whether you were wearing a seatbelt, and where you are feeling symptoms now. We also want to know about any pain or stiffness that existed before the crash.

Orthopedic and neurological exam. We test range of motion, muscle strength, reflexes, and nerve function. The exam is designed to locate the injured structures and rule out anything that needs urgent medical attention.

Imaging and referrals. If X-rays or advanced imaging are needed, we will tell you directly. We can refer you to a radiologist or an MD when necessary, and we coordinate with your other providers throughout care.

Written report and treatment plan. At the end of your first visit, you receive a written summary of our findings and a recommended course of care. This report documents your injuries from close to the date of the accident, which is useful for insurance claims and legal matters.

Techniques we use. Treatment for auto accident injuries at Weber Chiropractic may include chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release, Graston therapy (instrument-assisted soft tissue technique), ultrasound therapy, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), Kinesio taping, cupping therapy, and guided rehab exercises. Because our licensed massage therapists and acupuncturists work in the same building, we can add auto accident massage or acupuncture to your care plan without sending you to another clinic — one place, one coordinated team.

Care coordination. We work alongside medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and personal injury attorneys as needed. Our goal is that every provider treating you is working from the same picture.

Oregon PIP and Paying for Care

Oregon law requires that every auto insurance policy sold in the state include Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. Here is what that means for your care at Weber Chiropractic:

PIP pays regardless of fault. Oregon PIP is a no-fault benefit. Whether you were hit by another driver or the accident was your own fault, PIP is available to you.

The minimum coverage is $15,000 per person. Oregon's required minimum PIP benefit is $15,000 in medical benefits per person injured in a covered accident. Many policies carry more.

Care should begin within 14 days. Oregon PIP benefits for accident-related care generally require that treatment begin within 14 days of the accident. Waiting longer can complicate or reduce your coverage.

Coverage extends up to two years. PIP benefits can apply to accident-related care for up to two years from the date of the accident.

Chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage are all covered. All three services offered at Weber Chiropractic are included under Oregon PIP medical benefits.

We accept your auto insurance directly. Weber Chiropractic accepts personal auto insurance and handles the claim paperwork on your behalf. You do not need to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement.

No health insurance? PIP is your primary payer. For injuries caused by a car accident, PIP is the first payer regardless of whether you have separate health insurance. If your health insurer pays anything for accident-related care, they can later seek reimbursement from PIP — but you do not need health coverage to receive care after a crash.

Not at fault in the accident? PIP pays regardless of fault, so it covers your care either way. If another driver was at fault, you or your attorney may also pursue a third-party liability claim against that driver's insurance. We can provide the documentation and reports needed for that process.

Working with Attorneys on Personal Injury Cases

Many patients who come to us after an auto accident are also working with a personal injury attorney. We are familiar with that process and take it seriously.

We provide:

Detailed documentation. Every visit is documented. We write clear chart notes that describe your diagnosis, your treatment, and your progress over time. Attorneys and insurance adjusters rely on this record.

Narrative reports. When needed, we prepare written narrative reports that summarize your injuries, the care provided, and the clinical findings. These reports are written in plain language and are designed to support your claim.

Records requests. If your attorney or insurer requests your records, we respond promptly. We understand that delays in records production can affect claim timelines.

Liens and letters of protection: These are accepted on a case by case basis.

We do not promise outcomes in legal matters. Our role is to provide accurate documentation of your injuries and care. What happens with a claim or lawsuit is between you, your attorney, and the insurance companies involved.

Auto Accident Chiropractor FAQs

How soon after a car accident should I see a chiropractor? As soon as possible, and ideally within the first few days. Oregon PIP benefits generally require that care begin within 14 days of the accident. Early evaluation also creates an injury record close to the date of the crash, which is useful if you file an insurance claim. You do not need to wait until the pain becomes severe.

Is it safe to see a chiropractor after a car accident? Yes, for the large majority of accident injuries. Chiropractic care is a standard, hands-on treatment for the soft tissue and spinal injuries that commonly result from a crash. At your first visit, we conduct a thorough orthopedic and neurological exam before any treatment. If imaging is needed or your injuries require a different level of care, we will tell you and refer you accordingly.

Does Oregon PIP cover chiropractic care? Yes. Oregon's mandatory Personal Injury Protection benefit covers chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage therapy for injuries caused by a covered auto accident. The required minimum benefit is $15,000 per person. We accept Oregon PIP directly and handle the claim paperwork for you.

Do I need a referral or a police report? No referral is needed to schedule a chiropractic appointment at Weber Chiropractic. A police report is not required to start care, though having one is useful if you file an insurance claim or pursue a legal case. We recommend requesting one from the responding agency if you were in an accident where police responded.

How long does treatment for whiplash take? It varies. Mild whiplash often resolves with a few weeks of care. More significant injuries, or cases where symptoms were delayed before care began, can take longer. We give you a realistic treatment plan at your first visit based on the exam findings, and we reassess as you progress. We do not give the same timeline to every patient.

Can I see a chiropractor if I'm already seeing a doctor or PT? Yes, and it is often beneficial. We coordinate care with medical doctors, physical therapists, and other providers. If you have a referring physician, we will communicate with their office. If you are receiving separate physical therapy, we can make sure our treatment plan complements rather than duplicates what you are already receiving.

What if the accident was my fault? Oregon PIP pays regardless of fault. You are covered for chiropractic and medical care under your own PIP benefit whether you caused the accident or were hit by another driver. The fault question matters for liability claims between insurers, but it does not affect your ability to use your own PIP coverage.

Will you work with my attorney? Yes. We provide detailed chart notes, narrative reports, and respond promptly to records requests. If you are working with a personal injury attorney, let us know at your first visit and we will make sure our documentation meets what they need.
